Case report: Use of the ketogenic diet in reducing pediatric epileptic seizures

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition that can be defined by the occurrence of at least two unprovoked or reflex epileptic seizures, or one seizure with a high future risk of others. Particularly in childhood, the aforementioned seizures are a potentially serious and involuntary neurological phenomenon. The aim was thus to report a case of refractory clinical diagnosis and treatment in a child with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, who achieved control and improvement of seizures through the use of the ketogenic diet. The methodology used for this case report is descriptive and qualitative in nature, with a review of medical records and theoretical foundation in scientific articles from the Scielo, MedLine, and PubMed databases. In conclusion, a significant improvement in the control of the child's seizure frequency was observed after the introduction of the diet.
