Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Prevention and early diagnosis play crucial roles in reducing the impact of this cancer. The cytological examination of the uterine cervix, also known as the Papanicolaou test, is an essential tool in detecting precursor lesions and cervical cancer. During pregnancy, prenatal care offers a unique opportunity to perform this examination and ensure the health of expectant mothers. The present study assessed the coverage of cervical cytological examination during prenatal care through a cross-sectional study. The study aimed to identify the number of postpartum women in a hospital in Western Paraná who had an up-to-date cervical cytological examination after undergoing medical follow-up during pregnancy. It was found that only 54.8% of the participants had a recent examination, which is still an unsatisfactory number, considering the significant screening opportunity offered by pregnancy and the importance of cervical cancer prevention that such an examination provides. Therefore, it is vital that measures be taken to increase awareness, both among patients and healthcare professionals, regarding the urgent need to enhance cervical disease screening.
