Abstract

Introduction: Carotid arteries are important branches responsible for vascularization and supplying blood flow to the brain. Pathological changes in these arteries, caused by atherosclerotic disease, can promote thickening of the intima-media complex and increase the risk of cerebrovascular diseases. Objective: to analyze whether the thickness of the intima-media complex is related to the incidence of Ischemic Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA). Methodology: We retrospectively analyzed 208 patient records from January 2021 to July 2022. Subsequently, a study was developed based on the analysis of Echo Doppler exam reports of the patients' carotid arteries, aiming at the evaluation of the intima-media complex and its relationship with the incidence of ischemic stroke. Result: Of the 208 patients evaluated, 8 patients had stroke and 143 patients did not. Among the 208, 69 (33%) patients had an IMC > 0.8 mm in the ACC, and 139 (67%) patients had an IMC < 0.8 mm in the ACC. Regarding patients who did not present stenosis, 3.6% evolved with ischemic stroke. Of the patients who had stenosis, 4.3% evolved with ischemic stroke. In this case, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups using Fisher's test (p value = 1). In addition, the CMI values of the right and left ACC did not have a statistically significant predictive effect on the likelihood of developing ischemic stroke. Conclusion: The study observed that the thickness of the intima-media complex did not represent a predictor of the future risk of ischemic stroke.
