Abstract

Young children have a non-nutritive sucking habits and it alsow is a biological need, for exemplo the pacifire use, but with it comes the breastfeeding low adherence and it is already known that breast milk is the baby best and most adequate nutrients source. Several factors can influence the breastfeeding low adherence, and the pacifire use is considered a strong factor risk for early weaning. In addition, when use the pacifier for a long time, there is speech interference and malocclusion. Considering the consensus lack on the pacifire effects use on bretfeeding, and the maloclusion high rate, the aim of this literature review was to investigate the association between uso of pacifier and the presence of unfavorable behaviors arising from this habit, to guide health professionals on the instructions to give about pacifier for mothers in their individualities.  The literature exposes more unhealthy than healthy effects of pacifier use, pointing out early weaning as the most important, but the non-nutritive sucking is comfortable for the baby. Thus, when guiding the new mother regarding the use of a pacifier, the health professional need to individualize the care provided. Investigate different individual factors, and depending on the case, the introduction of the pacifier should only be after well established breastfeeding and in specific situations, to avoid maloclusions.
