Abstract

A growing number of patients who are victims of foreign bodies in facial tissues has been observed, although their occurrence in the tongue is rare. Removal is frequently indicated and professional experience with such situations facilitates the diagnosis and approach. Complications caused by the transposition of cutaneous or mucosal barriers include infections, hemorrhage, damage to noble structures and rejection associated with inflammation due to foreign body reaction. The diagnosis can be performed by means of ultrasonography, computed tomography and plain radiographs and, in many situations, the approach can be planned only by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, under local or general anesthesia since there is no imminent risk of death for the patient, otherwise, the approach should be multidisciplinary. The present study aims to describe the planning as well as the proposed surgical approach for the removal of fractured needles in the intimacy of the tongue under local anesthesia based on a brief review of the literature. It was concluded with this work that the permanence of these foreign bodies in contact with the tissues can lead to complications that can even cause death risk for the patient, being necessary and indicated the removal as early as possible.
