Mandibular osteonecrosis associated with dental extraction: A review of the literature

Abstract

This article aims to review the literature on drug-induced mandibular osteonecrosis associated with tooth extraction. A qualitative narrative literature review was carried out, conducted by means of a survey of electronic data taken from PubMed, SciELO, Google Scholar and Elsevier. References that addressed topics relevant to research and publications in Portuguese and English were considered, and studies that are not relevant to the proposed theme and that are not within the chronological limit from 2010 to 2020 were excluded. disease has been fully clarified, it is known that some factors are linked, such as the use of antiresorptive drugs, bisphosphonates and denosumab or anti-angiogenic drugs, which, when associated with invasive dental procedures such as dental extractions, increase the risk of developing this serious condition. This lesion may involve both the maxillary and mandibular bone, and may be asymptomatic or present with pain. At first it can be identified by the exposed bone for a period of at least 8 weeks, its treatment will depend on the stage that the patient presents, being able to make use of antibiotics, mouthwashes and the removal of necrosis.
