Screening and characterization of pre-cancerous skin lesions: an integrative review

The present research aimed to determine diagnostic criteria capable of supporting and promoting the development of effective screening programs for the population, which support the public health service in the early identification of these potentially malignant lesions, favoring their prognosis and helping the differential diagnosis with other dermatological conditions. This article consists of an integrative review, of a descriptive nature, carried out with the objective of answering the following guiding question: “What are the screening strategies for precancerous skin lesions and how are they characterized?”. Initially, 1706 studies were identified after searching the databases and 8 studies by secondary searches and gray bases of the literature. After screening, applying the eligibility criteria and analyzing the collected data, 17 articles were included in this integrative review. In this study, a large volume of existing evidence was reviewed and the main aspects concerning the screening and characterization of precancerous skin lesions were summarized. In this way, this literature review was able to elucidate an important evidence gap that limited the development of well-established clinical definitions, essential to support the diagnosis and therapeutic decision of precancerous skin lesions.
