Abstract

This work aims to conduct a literature review on the management of patients with injuries to the face caused by firearm projectiles (FAP). A literature review of the narrative type, of a qualitative nature, was carried out was conducted through survey of electronic data taken from PubMed, SciELO, Google Academic and Elsevier databases. References that addressed relevant topics for research and publications in Portuguese and English were considered, and studies that are not relevant to the proposed theme and that are not within the chronological limit from 1997 to 2020 were excluded from the literature review. Knowledge about firearms and their projectiles is of fundamental importance for the surgeon to understand the injuries they cause on the face, which can affect the soft and/or hard tissues. This understanding begins with the understanding of ballistics and the clinical recognition of injuries generated by firearm projectiles. The types of wounds have been changing over time, however, simultaneously, the management of patients has also been undergoing advances, from their initial approach to their surgical treatment.
