Abstract

The present study describes a technique for gaining access to calcified and atresic molar canals using inexpensive and easily accessible instruments. The technique was used on 70 patients participating in an endodontic treatment program conducted by department of Endodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Federal University of Uberlandia. All patients presented atresic, calcified canals or difficulty in accessing the cervical third of the root canal. Two clinical cases were separated to demonstrate the technique, one performed on tooth 46 of a 38 years old female patient and the other on tooth 16 of a 64 years old male patient. After clinical and radiographic examinations were performed coronal access and exploration using Kerr files and removal of tertiary dentin from the canal orifice using Gates Glidden drill #4 and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which provides access so canals can be cleaned with appropriate files. It concluded that the use of chelating substances and Gates Glidden drills to improve visualization and removal of dentin at the entrance of the canal orifice are shown efficient, inexpensive and easy to perform; being a technique indicated for clinicians who work in the public system where the financial resources to fund the acquisition and maintenance of the devices are limited.
