Stressing factors and the impact on the mental health of Medicine students

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence and incidence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms in medical students in order to understand the reasons that lead them to illness and its exacerbation, and to analyze and describe the impact of social isolation due to the COVID 19 pandemic on students' mental health. Literature Review: The prevalence of depression and anxiety among medical students is alarmingly higher than in the general population, as is the rate of suicidal ideation. (Dyrbye LN, Thomas MR, Shanafelt, 2006). The literature indicates that the panorama of graduation with the increasing amount of information, changing study methods, workload, uncertainty regarding professional competence and the job market, places students in a state of vulnerability that increases the likelihood of psychopathological conditions and consequent difficulties in their personal and professional development . Conclusions: Medical students are therefore among the groups most likely to suffer from stressors and develop common mental disorders. Changing the way medical students experience medical school will improve students' mental health and, consequently, their professional training, their performance as professionals, and their relationships with patients.
