Multidisciplinary care and attention to the oral health of the elderly

The aging of the population is one of humanity's greatest triumphs and also one of our greatest challenges. Worldwide, the proportion of people aged 60 and over is growing rapidly compared to other age groups. By 2025, it is predicted that there will be approximately 1.2 billion people over the age of 60 in the world. Aging does not mean being or being sick. But it means that differentiated care must be offered to this population. For reaching old age refers to changes, which may or may not be isolated. It is known that healthy and quality aging depends on numerous factors, such as sex, genetics, lifestyle, diet, physical activity. This article aims to review the literature on the importance of the multidisciplinary team in the care and attention to the oral health of the elderly. Bibliographic searches were carried out in the following databases: Scielo, LILACS, PubMed, MedLine using the following descriptors: “Geriatric dentistry”, “Comprehensive health care for the elderly” and “Oral rehabilitation”, as well as the respective terms in English: “Geriatric dentistry”, “Comprehensive health care” and “Mouth rehabilitation”. Scientific articles in English and Portuguese were included, as well as documents from national and international public entities, published between 2016 and 2021. Theses, dissertations and studies that did not address the main theme of this research were excluded. As a result, from the literature review carried out, it was found that the elderly are part of a population group that often presents diverse physiological and pathological changes, both related to general health and oral health, which may be associated with chronic use. of medication, eating and hygiene habits and the patient's own motivation. Therefore, it is concluded that a multidisciplinary approach is necessary at all stages of care for the elderly, from early diagnosis, as well as during planning and integrated treatment, to contribute to improving their quality of life.
