Abstract

Erythema nodosum (EN) is clinically characterized by the acute appearance of erythematous and painful cutaneous nodules, mainly in the pre-tibial region. It has several etiologies, including medications such as contraceptives, given the fact that estrogen and progesterone are associated with delayed hypersensitivity reactions and formation of immune complexes. The diagnosis of this rare condition is based on a thorough history and physical examination. However, in cases of doubt or atypical presentations, a deep incisional biopsy should be performed with a complete sample of the hypodermis for a definitive diagnosis of septal panniculitis. This article was prepared in a case study format and used qualitative data collected from real events, after approval by the research ethics committee. The objective of this work was to contribute to the scientific dissemination of the findings, since the relationship between the use of oral contraceptives and the appearance of erythema nodosum is a subject little explored in scientific databases. The patient's medical record provided by the physician after signing the patient's own written consent was used as a starting point. The present report approaches the clinical aspects of the NE, the management of the etiological investigation and the treatment.
